Qualitative market research in Singapore
Singapore has 5.88 million people, all of them in one city, and 98.4 per cent of them online (DataReportal, Digital 2026), speaking four official languages. Qualitative research there is fast to field and easy to watch, and it works best when the study respects the three communities behind the English-speaking surface. MindMarket runs in-depth interviews, focus groups and shop-alongs in Singapore with local moderators and one project manager for your whole study, and has interviewed bartenders and bar guests there for a global premium spirits brand.
AT A GLANCE
Singapore at a glance for researchers
- Population. 5.88 million people, median age 36.2, 100 per cent urban (DataReportal, Digital 2026). Chinese, Malay and Indian Singaporeans, plus a large expatriate workforce.
- Languages. English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil are the four official languages, and English is the language of business and of most interviews. Older participants and family topics often switch to Mandarin, Hokkien or Malay. Our moderators work in all four.
- Internet and mobile. 5.78 million internet users and 9.79 million mobile connections (DataReportal, Digital 2026). Online interviews run without any connection work.
- Where fieldwork happens. Everywhere is thirty minutes away. Viewing facilities, hotel suites and participants' homes are all easy to reach, which makes Singapore a natural pilot market before Southeast Asia.
- Data protection. The Personal Data Protection Act of 2012, amended in 2020: consent, a stated purpose and care with recordings. It applies to any organisation collecting data in Singapore, wherever it is based.
- Timing. Chinese New Year (January or February), Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali each empty part of the city for a few days. For Malay-Muslim audiences we do not schedule fieldwork during Ramadan.
IN THE FIELD
How does an interview run in Singapore?
On paper, Singapore looks like London with better weather: English-speaking, wired, punctual. The interview that works there is the one that remembers it is not.
- 01 The right community, not just the right profile. A premium whisky drinker in Singapore may be Chinese, Malay or Indian Singaporean, or an expatriate. We recruit by community as well as by category, because occasions and brands differ between them.
- 02 English, then the switch. Sessions open in English and often slip into Mandarin, Hokkien or Malay when the topic turns to family, food or money. A moderator who lives in Singapore follows the switch instead of stopping it.
- 03 Fast to field, easy to watch. Viewing facilities and hotel suites are minutes apart, participants are punctual and your team can watch live in the same time zone as Shanghai and Jakarta.
- 04 The hub for Southeast Asia. Singapore is where to test the guide and the stimulus before Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, with the same project manager and the same team for the rollout.
RECRUITMENT
How do you recruit participants in Singapore?
- 01 We recruit through local partners in Singapore, who find the people your brief describes, from hawker-centre regulars to private bankers and expatriate executives.
- 02 Screening runs in English and in the participant's home language, and small, affluent audiences are reached through referrals rather than databases.
- 03 MindMarket pays every participant's incentive itself. You never handle it.
METHODS
Which methods work in Singapore?
Most studies in Singapore run as in-depth interviews and focus groups, with shop-alongs, mystery shopping and online interviews when the question needs them.
| Method | Works well when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| In-depth interviews | Affluent, professional and B2B audiences, and personal categories | Small audiences overlap; check participants have not met each other |
| Focus groups | Concept and packaging reactions within one community and age group | Mixing communities changes the language and the dynamic; plan it on purpose |
| Shop-alongs in bars and malls | Premium drinks, beauty and food, where the choice is made on the spot | Venue permission in bars; mall rules on filming |
| Mystery shopping | Luxury retail, hotels and banks with exacting service standards | Brief evaluators on local service norms and on the four languages at the counter |
| Online in-depth interviews | Busy professionals and quick reads before a regional rollout | Lunch-hour and evening slots fill first; book early |
QUESTIONS
Questions buyers ask about research in Singapore
How much does market research cost in Singapore?
A full-service qualitative study with MindMarket starts at $40,000 for the first market, and Singapore added to a multi-country study starts from $8,000. Venues and incentives cost more than in neighbouring countries, and affluent audiences are reached through referrals. Every quote is itemised and follows within 48 hours of a first call. Estimate your study.
Do I need a local moderator in Singapore if everyone speaks English?
Yes. English is the language of business, but conversations about family, food and money slip into Mandarin, Hokkien or Malay, and the three communities use brands differently. MindMarket's moderators in Singapore live there and work in the four official languages.
Is Singapore a good pilot market for Southeast Asia?
Yes, for the guide and the stimulus, not for the findings. Singapore is fast to field and easy to watch, so clients test the discussion guide there, then roll out to Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam with the same team. What Singaporeans say does not predict Jakarta.
Can I watch the sessions live?
Yes. Viewing facilities with mirrored rooms and live streaming are minutes apart, sessions run in English or with an interpreter, and Singapore shares its time zone with Shanghai and most of Southeast Asia.
How long does fieldwork take in Singapore?
It depends on the audience, the number of interviews and the method. Recruitment is quick for general consumers and slower for small, affluent or professional audiences. A full multi-country project typically takes 8 to 12 weeks from planning to final report.
Can you help us decide, not only run the interviews?
Yes. Beyond the fieldwork, our Customer-Led Strategy work turns what people in Singapore told us into a recommendation: what to do, what not to do, and why. We form the hypotheses, test them with your customers and recommend from their words. If you already work with strategy consultants, we work alongside them.
