Customer-Led Strategy Innovation pipeline

What should we build next, according to the people who will buy it?

A customer-led innovation pipeline is built from the problems your customers are already solving badly for themselves, rather than from ideas generated inside the business. MindMarket looks for the workarounds, the improvisations and the small compromises people have stopped noticing they make, because those are the places where demand already exists and nothing is yet being sold. What you get is a prioritised pipeline, with the observed behaviour behind every entry.

A customer in a product design studio, describing with her hands the product she wishes existed, sketches and prototypes blurred behind her.

THE SITUATION

Is this your situation?

  • Your pipeline is full of ideas from inside the building, and not one of them started with something a customer did.
  • Innovation keeps producing improvements that customers did not ask for and do not seem to notice.
  • You need to defend a development budget, and the case for it is currently made of conviction rather than evidence.

HOW WE WORK

How does MindMarket approach the innovation pipeline?

  1. We agree what kind of innovation you are able to ship. A pipeline full of things you cannot build is not a pipeline, so we start by agreeing with your team what you can realistically develop, at what scale and in what time. It keeps the work useful rather than merely interesting.
  2. We watch for the workarounds people have stopped noticing. We observe your customers over time and in their own context, looking for the unmet needs and the improvised fixes they no longer see as unusual. We do not ask people what they want, because behaviour is a far more honest guide than a wish list.
  3. We prioritise the pipeline against what we observed, not against opinion. You get a prioritised pipeline in which every entry is tied to a behaviour we saw, with a clear view of what to build first and what can wait in the backlog.

THE DELIVERABLE

What do you get?

  • A prioritised pipeline, with the customer evidence behind each entry written out.
  • The workarounds your customers have normalised, which are the clearest signals of demand you are not yet serving.
  • What to build first and what to leave in the backlog, with the reasoning behind the order.
  • A case for the development budget that rests on what customers do rather than on what the business hopes.
  • All of it as a Decision Case: one short written recommendation on the decision above, with the evidence under each claim, in a form your board can act on.

METHODS

Which research methods do you use for innovation pipeline?

Methods that watch behaviour over time: ethnographic research, online bulletin boards and UX research for digital products.

QUESTIONS

Strategy questions, answered straight

How do you find out what customers want you to build next?

We do not ask customers what they want; we watch what they already do. Ethnographic visits and online bulletin boards show the workarounds, the improvisations and the small frustrations people have stopped noticing, and UX sessions show where a product is being bent to do a job it was not built for. Each of those is a problem customers are already solving badly for themselves, and a pipeline built from them is one you can defend.

How long does an innovation study take?

An innovation study runs as Deep Listen, eight to twelve weeks, because observation takes longer than interviewing and the pipeline is built in a decision workshop with your product team. One narrow question, such as whether a specific workaround is widespread, runs as First Listen in two to three weeks. Always Listening keeps the observation going between releases.

Customers do not know what they want. Does this still work?

Yes, and that is exactly why we do not ask them what they want. We look at what they already do, especially the awkward things they have stopped noticing, because behaviour tells the truth where a wish list does not.

How far ahead does this look?

Far enough to build. We work on demand that exists now and is not yet served, which is a different exercise from long-range trend forecasting.

What does innovation research cost?

Innovation research is priced per market on our pricing page, with ethnographic visits and online communities as their own lines. Most pipeline decisions run as Deep Listen, because the value is in the observation across several customers and settings. The strategy work is quoted after the framing conversation; your itemised quote arrives within 48 hours.
