Customer-Led Strategy Brand repositioning

Can our brand credibly move, and how far?

A customer-led repositioning decision tests how far a brand can move before people stop believing it. MindMarket establishes what your brand currently gives you permission to do and to charge, how far the customers you want would let you stretch, and what you would lose from the customers you already have. Repositioning tends to fail for one reason: a company changes what it says about itself faster than its customers change what they believe about it. We find out where that line sits for your brand, before you spend on crossing it.

THE SITUATION

Is this your situation?

  • You want to move upmarket, or in another direction entirely, and the debate inside the building has quietly turned into a matter of personal taste.
  • A new creative platform is about to be signed off, and there is no customer evidence behind it, only enthusiasm.
  • Your prices have moved and your brand has not, and something in the funnel has stopped converting.

HOW WE WORK

How does MindMarket approach brand repositioning?

  1. We define the move precisely, in customers and in numbers. "More premium" is not a decision. "Credible at forty per cent above our current price, to this kind of customer, without losing that kind of customer" is one, and it can be tested. We spend the first session with your team getting to a sentence like that.
  2. We test the move with the people who would have to pay for it. We talk to your current customers, the customers you want, and the ones who have drifted away, and we ask the awkward question directly: what would you think of us if we changed? Their answers, in their own words, are what makes the recommendation trustworthy.
  3. We tell you how far the brand can credibly go, and what breaks past that point. You get a range, not a yes or a no: how far you can move, what has to change first for the move to be believed, and what it would cost you at the bottom of your existing customer base.

THE DELIVERABLE

What do you get?

  • The credible range of movement for your brand, stated as a range rather than as a verdict, so you can choose where within it to land.
  • What your brand currently gives you permission to do, in your customers' own words.
  • The specific proof points that would make the new position believable to the people who matter most.
  • A plain account of what you stand to lose, and from whom, so the decision is taken with open eyes.
  • All of it as a Decision Case: one short written recommendation on the decision above, with the evidence under each claim, in a form your board can act on.

METHODS

Which research methods do you use for brand repositioning?

Typically focus groups and in-depth interviews, with mystery shopping when the experience has to carry the new position as much as the communication does.

QUESTIONS

Strategy questions, answered straight

How do you test whether a brand can be repositioned?

We test a repositioning with two groups: the customers you have, who tell us what the brand currently gives you permission to do and to charge, and the customers you want, who tell us how far they would let the brand stretch before they stop believing it. We show the direction, not the creative, and we listen for the point where credibility breaks. The result is a range: how far the brand can move, and what it would cost you with the people who already like you.

How long does a brand repositioning study take?

A single-market repositioning runs as First Listen, two to three weeks, when the question is one direction and one audience. A repositioning across several markets, with both current and target customers, runs as Deep Listen, eight to twelve weeks from framing session to decision workshop, because the answer differs by market and the board needs the comparison.

Is this brand tracking?

No. Tracking tells you where the brand stands over time. This tells you how far it can move, and what breaks if you push it further than customers will follow.

Can you test creative work?

We can test whether a direction is believed and what it signals to people. We are not a creative pre-testing house, and we will say so if that is what you need.

What does brand repositioning research cost?

Repositioning research is priced per market on our pricing page, with the strategy work quoted after the framing conversation, because a single-market move and a global one are not the same problem. A one-market check runs as First Listen; a multi-market programme runs as Deep Listen. Your itemised quote arrives within 48 hours.
